SCHAKO Newsletter September 9, 2009

Dear Sir and Madam,

Currently, the expansion of Barcelona Airport around Terminal T1 is arguably the most ambitious construction project in the Catalan capital. Over 100,000 aircraft passengers per day will take advantage of up to 90 landings and takeoffs per hour, passing through one of 106 gates in the process. In addition, the 1,258 billion euro project is setting other benchmarks as well.

The T1 occupies a surface of 544,000 m², which corresponds to more than 74 football fields. Up to 70% of the impressive building made of aluminium, steel and glass will be flooded by natural light – no easy undertaking in the heat of the Spanish sun, especially when simultaneously high requirements have been set for sustainability and energy efficiency.

A focus has been placed on solar energy – and on SCHAKO.
An entire range of SCHAKO products, including jet nozzles WDA, fire protection flaps and the communicative signalling and switching bus system KOMES, ensure that the light-flooded T1 is also pleasantly and safely air-conditioned in the summer heat – and that power resources are handled economically.

The cable-saving bus system solution KOMES in 19" rack housing was integrated into 30 switch cabinets. Controlling, among other components, 1,722 SCHAKO fire protection flaps, it contributes significantly to fire load minimisation in Terminal T1. KOMES quickly visualises alert service bulletins with text indicators while also logging end switch settings, downtimes and maintenance times, for example. With KOMES, end switch settings can also be addressed retroactively, classifications can be changed, and associated systems (e.g. fans) can be controlled via relay boards.

Once again, this shows the clear advantages of technical engineering made by SCHAKO: the reliability of a medium-size enterprise with experience gathered over decades in the field of air conditioning and ventilation technology. Not to mention the secure expertise and development competence of one of the technology leaders on the world market. .
